Yup, Mr. Young wrote that song about his '48 Buick Roadmaster hearse, Mort, which he used as his bandmobile in the early days in Canada. Transmission went out, I think. He subsequently got another hearse, dubbed it Mort 2, drove it to L.A., and the rest is music history.

Thanks for the explanation. My dad wanted to buy me a used hearse for my first car... He was an insurance broker and always wanted me to drive big heavy cars. (He'd have loved Hummers!) Then, I think, he realized how well it would work as a "room away from home." Not so good for a hormonal teen, especially a daughter.

My dad had a Buick when I was very little. There is a picture somewhere where I am sitting on the fender. When I saw your illo it brought back that image to my mind instantly.
