Illustration Friday: Signs

Howard missed the sign and soon found he was going nowhere fast.

This is in memory of the late great comedian Mitch Hedberg who once said, "I like an escalator because an escalator can never break, it can only become stairs. There would never be an 'escalator temporarily out of order' sign, only an 'escalator temporarily stairs. Sorry for the convenience.'"

I was going to go all soap-box and put a gun with the international 'no' sign over the top of it, but I thought that would be hypocritical, as I own a gun (unloaded and with a trigger lock, thank you), and I come from a family of hunters. I have thoughts about automatic weapons and how I don't get NRA fanatics, but just thinking about putting it all down in words made me tired, so you get a Hedberg tribute instead.

I originally did the illustration to the right, but my wife thought it really didn't convey the non-moving aspect of poor Howard, so my post was delayed a day whilst I put the view from behind the poor beggar.

I've seen some great illustrations this week on the topic, and I salute those who've
put some great thought and talent into the challenge.

Anyway, peace to all of you and just know that some signs are of more consequence than others.

I happened to luck out cuz I just made the piece with the house shaped sign, but it's certainly not easy to come up with images for IF! I'm always glad when my husband critiques my work, not at first but afterwards I'm happy about the changes. You captured this perfectly and it's a clever and enlightning post. I have realized that a broken escalator is still a set of stairs but you articulated this point perfectly!!! Have a great week!

Fantastic double view here! Sometimes it pays to delay a day or two before calling it finished.

Well, when we're right, we're right. (Us wives, that is!) I love the side view and being able to see his frustration and bewilderment, but the top view definately shows his dilemma more clearly. I love the optimism of (uh-oh) the guy you quoted. (If I hit the back button to check his name I'll lose this...sorry!) Anyway, another terrific, thought provoking post.

Hey- I think they both work gggreat! Oddly- I was just on an escalator turned stairs on Monday- it mad me dizzy somehow looking down at the grooves of each step as I waked up them-- there's an optical illusion that makes it seem they are moving.

I've walked up the steps of escalators out of service and it feels like I'm never going to reach the top, It's as though my mind is saying, "no, no no, this isn't right, you are supposed to float to the top". Anyway.
This idea is a nockout from either view, slumped shoulder from rear view, and a surrender to the inevitable climb from the side view. Mitch Hedberg must have been funny and clever and Howard proves it. Ever fine!

I have to agree with your wife. I think the side view, while very nicely done, implies motion going up. I love the quote. Very nice job, as always. And, as usual, it's hard to know which is better - the illo or the story. Wonderful!

This gives one pause and is definately something to ponder! Thanks for the profound insight and your ability to capture it!
