In honor of that Greek mathematician dude Archimedes (287-212 BC), who discovered (or mebbe just gave a name to) the Law of Hydrostatics; said discovery made as he stepped into his bath and observed the displacement of water. You'll have to go elsewhere if you want an explanation of the Law. My mother was the mathematician in the family... not I.
Oh, he also surmised that if he had a lever long enough (and someplace to stand) he could move the Earth.

Archimedes was the archetypal creative dreamer! I love the wonderful stone textures of the interior with that idyllic scene outside the window. The look on his face is priceless... the "aha!" moment!

What's messing my brain up is the lever and the earth thing. It's like trying to pick up the chair you are sitting on with your feet off the ground.

Loud and clear. A body placed in water displaces an equal amount of something or other... Your mother would know. I like the illustration... but prefer to displace the water in a cool pool. The earth and lever concept is fantastic.... I had'nt remembered that one at all. I guess if we do colonize the moon we could try. All together now.....!

very illuminating.. my poor brain skipped a beat in terror at the mention of math.. though I suspect that artists are (natural) mathmeticians... with an inborne fear of numbers we simply... sense the rightness or wrongness... or.. maybe not... (grin)
