Illustration Friday: Feet

Okay, so it's not really a pic of feet... but it's an illustration of something important to my feet... my shoes. Oh, and my smelly socks. I try to run four to five times a week. I'll go stretches of months at a time when I'm very good about it. Then there are weeks at a time when the shoes don't see the light of day. Ran the Big Sur Marathon when I turned 40, but since then I've only had the gumption to train for half-marathons; the Humboldt through the Avenue of the Giants being that run of choice.

I've included the progression of the drawing... first one being the inked sketch, next one with flat areas of color added in Photoshop, third working on shading, and last one with the inked layer made visible again. Looking at it, I'm sorta partial to the illustration without the inked lines, the third one. Any feelings one way or 'tother?

Peace to all.

great drawing. i think the last one is ok, only maybe the outline of socks is too strong.

How cool to share your process with us. They are all pretty neat...I think the third one is my favorite.

I'm pretty partial to a black outline...control issues and such...the 3rd image is pretty realistic without it...good for you for running

i think maybe if u went with a thinner or lighter line in the last dwg it might work better but really like the other 3 before it.

Runners impress me (I can go for hours at a fast walk and crank it out on any cardio machine, but i just can't run), and the fact that you ran a marathon at 40 is extremely impressive. Half marathons at whatever age you are...impressive. Can you tell that I'm impressed:> I love this process series here. I think my favorite is the bottom with the outlines, although the third one looks great as well. I just like outlining things. Now...go for a run!

Really appreciate the comments, all. Thank you, Ursa & Fuzhen, for the comments on the heaviness of the lines. I see what you're saying there.

Regarding the running... I'm 52, and it's been over a year since I did my last half-marathon, so I am woefully out of shape... running when it's not too wet or too cold.

Thanks for showing the process. It seems your 'secret formula' is your ability to draw very well indeed.

I love this, but then again, I have a soft spot for the subject. I like the third also. I really like the background. Equipment is very important. There's nothing better than a comfy pair of running shoes and a trail to be conquered : .)

I agree about the third one. I love the subject matter :)

The process looks great. I kind of lean towards the third one. But maybe with lighter lines the last one would be better. Hmmm I am almost two years older than you and used to run all the time. Did two marathons and not sure how many half marathons but that was when I was in my 30's. Quit running in my 40's. There are days I miss it and days I don't. I rather be gardening now. I am very impressed with anyone who runs past age 40. Now get those running shoes on.

I tell you how realistic your shoes and socks are, I can almost smell the stinky socks. My heart says 4, my head says 3.

Beautifully rendered running shoes. It's hard for me to keep up my exercise too. Mrs. Trowbridge can be very demanding at times.

Cool. I like seeing the progression. I really like the last one. It looks like comic book art and I love comics.

Hello, I love the work in progress and the final illo is a beaut! I like the texture and mood of the 3rd illo but the 4th is sharp!

Great drawing as usual! I love seeing the progression of your illo...I sort of follow the same process in my own. I like all of the renderings...and, I even like the last one..perhaps a thinner stroke, or a lighter shade of black would make it less sharp!! All in all...fantastic as usual!

Think I prefer the coloured one without the lines, it's has a more poetic atmoshere! Have cut down visits lately due to eyes, and today verification words in boxes are'nt working. But don't need one here so hopefully this will work. You sound fitter than me.

I love seeing the progression of a piece of art. This is a great composition. I think I like the fourth one best because the lines make the details stand out

They look so real. Your style is always great!

I agree: #3. These shoes have a very distinct personality! (And wow about doing Big Sur. I still only have the gumption to do half marathons and not even that since injuring myself.)

Thank you so much for your kind comments. :) I haven't had time to fiddle around with "monster" yet, so I'm not sure what I'll come up with. Love your artwork!!!

Jez!...So much effort for a result like this?...Self criticism is not only a virtue, is a necessity.
